Sportsbet Racing History and Gambling Licence
Sportsbet has been around since 1993, and is one of Australia’s most well-known betting sites. It was the first bookmaker to be licensed in Australia and is currently licenced and regulated by the Northern Territory government. It was bought in 2005 by Matthew Tripp, when it was still a small company based in Darwin. He had good timing, since his purchase came right around the time when online gambling was finally coming into its own in Australia.
It has been owned by Irish betting site Paddy Power since 2010, and has been Australia’s biggest bookie since 2012. Under Paddy Power, Sportsbet has expanded impressively, and they now offer their services across Australia.
Their offers are available to residents of Australia and New Zealand, however some state restrictions do apply – make sure you read all terms and conditions when placing a bet!
Horse Racing Products
While Sportsbet also offers harness racing and greyhound racing, for this review we have been mostly focusing on their Sportsbet racing offers.
They offer betting online, over the phone, and via their mobile app. They also have a credit facility for members of the site who have verified their ID and are Australian residents.
Now, let’s go through their offers together.
Sportsbet Betting Products
Live racing allows clients to place bets on races that are currently ongoing. It’s a win-only option, so no second-placers will be paid out. The option is only available on their mobile app. Your bet can also be cancelled if the event that you are betting isn’t completed.
Futures Racing allows clients to bet on races in the near future. These races are shown on the website’s home page under ‘Horse Racing – Futures AUS/NZ’. Futures Racing prices are fixed for races where the field has not been selected or declared. Sportsbet call these bets ‘all in’ bets, which means that even if your horse doesn’t make the cut and is not select in the field, your bet will result in a loss. So, do your research!
All-Ups Racing Multibets are a great product where a prudent punter can place a bet from as little as 2 legs to as many as 15 legs. Sportsbet even accepts combination Sports and Racing Multibets if that interests you, these can be combined up to 13 legs. Maximum payouts on multibets are $500,000… whoa.
Sportsbet offers Jockey Challenge Bets, which are win-only bets with no refunds possible. These bets will pay out only if the selected jockey wins, and will not be refunded if the selected jockey does not ride in the race.
Trainer Challenge allows clients to place bets on the trainers. These pay out for first, second, and third place with a 3, 2, 1, spread distribution.
All of these offers have their own terms and conditions attached, and we recommend that you study them carefully before committing to a bet.

Sportsbet offer an excellent joining bonus to prospective Melbourne Cup Carnival punters. Their special Melbourne Cup offers allow a new member to place their first bet with Sportsbet on the Melbourne Cup (or, anything else you want really), and they will match it up to AU$250. (Claim now!)
There are some exclusions for people in certain states, however Sportsbet have gone the extra mile to accommodate bettors from all areas. If you find yourself in this sitatuion, when you join Sportsbet by clicking here, get on their live chat and ask them what they can offer you.
In regards to promotions, this is really an area Sportsbet racing shines. Daily and Weekly promotions are provided to let bettors squeeze that extra little bit of value out of their dollar. Cash Back offers and Odds Boost offers are the most common specials you can expect. For example, a very common offer will be “if your selection finishes 2nd or 3rd in races 1-4 at Flemington this Saturday, cash back up to $50′, or ‘25% odds boost on all horses owned by Darren Weir’.
We love these promotions and think Sportsbet are probably the best at them, check them out directly by signing up with Sportsbet here and click on their ‘promotions’ link at the top of the page. (note: you must have an account and be logged in to view their offers)
Sportsbet Website and Betting Slip
Honestly, we can’t give the Sportsbet racing website top marks. It’s slightly chaotic, and it can be difficult to find the information you need without Google, since the links aren’t really well laid out.
All that aside, though, the website does a bang-up job of making the really pertinent information – how to sign up, and how to bet – available at first glance. Their betting page has a pretty cool layout, with the sports along the left side of the screen and the various events listed according to date. They’ve also got a sweet setup for checking the odds, and a decent tips page, so Sportsbet has that going for them.
The betting slip is nicely laid out, as well, with all the information you need neatly set out in an easy-to-understand format. It allows you to select multiple bets at once and combine them into a multibet, and shows your total stake at the bottom. It can be hidden while you’re browsing so it’s not as obnoxious as some, and doesn’t cause your browser to cry about popups.
Sportsbet offers live chat, phone, and email help to their clients. The live chat seemed slightly buggy at first, but the representative was helpful and knowledgeable once we reached him. Their email response was not the fastest we’ve ever seen, but nor was it spectacularly slow, and the representative there was similarly helpful and knowledgeable.
Sportsbet is a excellent option if you’re looking at bookmakers for Melbourne Cup Carnival betting. They have a good setup and an excellent reputation, with long years of excellent service. If you’re just looking to place a few bets for the Melbourne Carnival, this is a very good site.
If, on the other hand, you’re new to the art of betting and want to make sure exactly what you’re getting into, there are better, clearer sites out there that will make it easier to find the information you need. Make sure to keep your options open, have a read of our other Bookie Reviews here.
