Longines Mile

2016 longines mileThe first edition of the Longines Mile will be held on Saturday 29th October 2016 at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne.

Taking place on the first day of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival, the 2016 Longines Mile (1600m) will be the inaugural running of this newly created race.

The Longines Mile came about due to a spring racing programme change by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC), along with Racing Victoria.

Designed to enhance Victoria Derby Day and the Flemington carnival in general, it’s an exciting initiative by the club.

2016 Longines Mile

The Melbourne Cup Carnival received a makeover for the 2016/2017 racing season.

In a bold move, the VRC made changes to the first and last days, Victoria Derby Day and Emirates Stakes Day.

  • Derby Day: The Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) moved to the final day, Emirates Stakes Day, and became the Emirates Stakes.
  • Stakes Day: The Emirates Stakes (1600m) moved to the first day, Victoria Derby Day, and became the Longines Mile.

So the Mackinnon Stakes is now the Emirates Stakes and still a weight-for-age race over 2000 metres, while the former Emirates Stakes is now the Longines Mile and remains a 1600m handicap event.

Longines Mile on Victoria Derby Day

Having the Longines Mile run on Victoria Derby Day makes it an attractive option for spring. Any horses competing in previous feature 1600m races such as the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield or the Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley are likely candidates.

The Longines Mile is destined to become one of the great races on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, especially for international gallopers bypassing the longer distance races.

The 2016 Melbourne Cup Carnival features four days of exciting spring racing action.

2016 Melbourne Cup Carnival

The first Saturday features the 2016 Victoria Derby for three-year-olds, followed by the 2016 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, before the 2016 Crown Oaks on Thursday. The 2016 Emirates Stakes highlights the final Saturday of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

  • Victoria Derby Day – Saturday 29th October 2016
  • Melbourne Cup Day – Tuesday 1st November 2016
  • Crown Oaks Day – Thursday 3rd November 2016
  • Enirates Stakes Day – Saturday 5th November 2016
