Emirates Stakes

2016 emirates stakesThe 2016 Emirates Stakes highlights the final day of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival on Saturday 5th November 2016 at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne.

Formerly a 1600 metre race under handicap conditions, the Emirates Stakes is now a 2000 metre event raced at weight-for-age.

In a change of spring racing programming the Victoria Racing Club announced changes to the Mackinnon Stakes and Emirates Stakes.

The Mackinnon Stakes, a 2000m WFA race held on the first day, Victoria Derby Day, would move to the final day and become the Emirates Stakes, to be raced under the same conditions, over 2000 metres at weight-for-age.

To allow for the Mackinnon Stakes change, the Emirates Stakes, formerly held on the final day, would move to the first day of the carnival and become the Longines Mile, to be raced over the same 16oom distance and handicap conditions.

One of the toughest handicap races during the Melbourne spring racing carnival, the Emirates Stakes is held alongside the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic over 1200 metres.

The 2016 Melbourne Cup Carnival features four fantastic days of feature racing action.
