Today’s impressive Caulfield Classic winner Good Standing could bypass the Victoria Derby and head to the Emirates Stakes instead.
The Artie Schiller colt led all the way to win the 2016 Caulfield Classic (2000m), and it was a top Derby trail for Flemington later this month.
Trainer James Cummings has the Victoria Derby as an option but is leaning towards taking on the older gallopers in Group 1 Emirates Stakes on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
“He’ll only have to carry 51 (kilograms) in the Emirates, and it keeps him at 2000 metres so that’s something to consider,” Cummings said.
Caulfield Guineas form holds up
The Caulfield Guineas form held up today at Caulfield with Good Standing proving too classy for his rivals.
He was unlucky last Saturday when unplaced in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas from a wide gate. Jockey Blake Shinn ensured luck would be on his side today.
Shinn bounded Good Standing to the lead where he was able to dictate the race. Shinn stepped on the gas in the straight and the horse did the rest, cruising to the line a comfortable winner.
The talented hoop was always confident his mount could get the job done.
“He was the best horse in the race and I was confident I could lead into the headwind,” Shinn said.
“He’s got a great turn of foot and he’s mixed it with the best three-year-olds around.”
“He was just too good today and he will be better again in the autumn.”
Good Standing started $2.90 favourite and won by 0.75 lengths from Rocketeer. In third place , one length further back, was Inference.
The 2016 Emirates Stakes (2000m) is on Saturday 5th November 2016 at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.
Emirates Stakes odds will be available at online bookmaker Sportsbet as soon as they become available.
Good Standing is $11 in latest 2016 Victoria Derby odds at Sportsbet. Inference is the $6 favourite, with Rocketeer third in betting at $8.
The 2016 Victoria Derby will run on Saturday 29th October at Flemington.
